The Kewet battery electric vehicle was first created in the early 1990’s by the company KEW Industries. The first models utilized 48 volt power systems with 5 kilowatt motors featuring 4 speed manual transmissions. Model 3 upgraded the motor to 7.5 kilowatts and model 4 used a 60 volt system with a 10 KW motor. The fifth model upgraded even more and even included a van-style edition. Kewet’s featured 3 seats and could run for up to 50 miles between charges at speeds of up to 50 mph. They were also fitted with optional heater systems. Kewet’s were made of steel with a composite shell. There over 1000 total vehicles made of the 1-5 models
In 1998 the Kewet Company was bought by Elbil Norge who retooled the Kewet line and renamed the cars “Buddy”. The first Buddy model is actually the 6th edition Kewet.
Buddy cars are designed to provide practical and functional transportation within a short range urban area. They are very short in length and can even be parked sideways in some regions. The current Buddy is composed of a steel tube frame with safety cage encased in a fiberglass body. Most of the metal parts are protected against any rust damage. Buddy’s run on a powerful 72 volt 13 kilowatt motor system, and they are considered extremely reliable.
They are fitted with specialized lead batteries which are value priced and high yield. The batteries can be fully recharged in less than 8 hours. An single hour’s charge will allow the vehicle to travel up to 10 km. A grounded 10 amp outlet is sufficient for charging uses and the batteries have a 2-5 year lifespan.
There is a fleet of lithium-ion battery powered Buddy’s which is currently in development. All Buddy models will eventually be upgradeable to Li-Ion technology. In Europe the Buddy is considered a 4 wheel motorcycle and can be driven on normal roads with a regular license.
There are 2 versions of the current Buddy model. One is regular 2-door classic model, the other is a BuddyCab equipped with a foldable roof. ElBil Norge is capable of producing up to 500 Buddy’s a year. They are currently pursuing purchasing additional operations facilities to extend production and sales to the global market. As of now, the buddy is only available for sale in Norway.
The Buddy is a general non-polluting, quiet and efficient vehicle. It is capable of most of the driving applications of any gas-powered car. Buddy’s are very popular in Norway and many well-known local celebrities own them.
